Across the Infirmary Bridge ( yes, it also bounces) and you reach Ladies Walk and a spot for quiet reflection that includes the city’s war memorials and a small garden area dedicated to nurse Edith Cavell. She was recognised as a heroic figure during the first world war as she helped many allied soldiers escape from Belgium. Alas she was captured and sentenced to death. The War Memorial itself carries inscriptions of many battles and some of those place names echo down the decades with current day relevance.
