So unless you’ve taken a wrong turn , you should now have crossed the Ness Bridge and up on the hill you’ll see Inverness Castle. Well, one of them anyway. Because there have been umpteen castles on that hill over the centuries but people keep knocking them down or blowing them up. Even Robert the Bruce indulged in a bit of castle destruction and please don’t get us started on the Jacobites or we’ll be here all night. But there’s a Victorian castle on the hill now and until recently you’d have seen it surrounded by police cars and prison vans because this was the local courthouse where justice was meted out to a whole host of unsavoury characters. That was always a great disappointment to tourists. Especially those who found themselves in the dock. But now, a multi-million pound facelift is underway and in 2025 the castle will have a new life as a heritage centre and, as the scaffolding comes down, it will be the number one spot for photo opportunities. Just watch yourself stepping backwards when you take those selfies. OK, onward we go…just a short saunter or pedal along Ness Walk towards the Cathedral.
