It may sound like a fancy cocktail and some think the shiny structure is a bit like a spaceship. In fact, it houses one of the most ancient ideas in engineering. The power of the rushing water turns a screw which then generates a force which, in this case, generates electricity. And, er, that’s the limit of our scientific knowledge. Google it, why don’t you? The Greek mathematician Archimedes gets the credit for this, but some scholars say the ancient Egyptians were way ahead of him. From here, go under the bridge and take the stairs up to the West Link road for some stunning views over the river. On the video you’ll see how this stretch of the water runs parallel to the Caledonian Canal - another fine place to walk. But that’s for another day.
