An Historical walk around the Muirtown Basin of the Caledonian Canal in Inverness. Explore the engineering wonder of the Highlands and the rich history of this part of Inverness.
Where : Starting at 2.30pm from the Canal Office, Muirtown Wharf, Inverness IV3 5LE and lasting approx. 1½hrs.
There is limited parking at the basin but there is also extensive parking at the retail park close by.
When : As part of the Walking and Wheeling Festival on Sunday 7th June.
Cost : Free of charge but donations welcome.

Activity Level : Fully accessible with ramps at the lock at Clachnaharry.
Thomas Telford was asked to survey and build the canal with the help of William Jessop. The work was expected to take 7 years to complete at a cost of £474,000. In 1822 the 22 mile canal with its 29 locks was open. It had taken 12 years to build at a cost of £910,000.
